The lovely NZXT Phantom 410-599 viewsChoosing the right case is always challenging when preparing to build a new PC. There are just so many choices out there. Also, there are many things to consider such as fan placement and the number of drive bays. But mostly, it just needs to look cool. I went with a Maximum PC magazine recommendation that I thought looked cool.

The Parts!-431 viewsMost of these components were also recommended by Maximum PC. They did an article a year ago now where they spec'ed out a PC with the best "bang for your buck" components; basically a mid-range rig. I pretty much went with their picks but made a few changes based on personal preference and invaluable input from my uber geek bro-in-law, Steve Schlosnagle. It's also very important when you get the parts to arrange them in this manner for a cool pic to upload to fb. Budget: $1200.

Empty Phantom 410 -392 viewsHere's the inside of the Phantom. Note the grommets in the mobo tray for running cables below the mobo. I've not had a case this fancy before.

Gygabyte's GA-Z87X -380 viewsHeaviest mobo I've ever lifted. Huge heat sinks on the chipsets.

Unpacking the GA-Z87X -411 viewsLook! The box! It opens!

Mobo unpacked -431 viewsHere you can see that Gygabyte provides everything you need: User manual, chip set driver CD, I/O shield, 4 SATA cables and the SLI cable you would need if you were building a super gaming rig and you wished to slave two video cards together.

Close up! -397 viewsCheck out my fancy heat sinks baby!

Thermaltake's SP-750M -382 viewsPC's use power, so choosing a reliable power plant is a necessity. Max PC recommended this and a Corsair. A friend of mine had issues with Corsair PSU's, so I chose the Thermaltake.

PSU Box contents -411 viewsLook at the nice bag!
|
Bag contents -388 viewsThe nice bag contains all of the various power connectors you will need to power the components of your PC. I love these new PSU's which allow you to only plug in the cables you need. For those who don't know, older PSU's had ALL of the cables hard wired so you had a mess in your case with unnecessary cables.

This is where the power supply unit will be installed. -372 viewsNZXT provides rubber bumpers for the PSU to rest upon, presumably to reduce vibration.

PSU installed! -384 viewsHere's the Phantom 410 with it's power supply unit in place.
